The shaped bodies are produced by roll-granulation or extrusion of plastic mixtures consisting of a pulverulent solid and a liquid component, the pulverulent solid consisting of precipitated and dried finely disperse silica and the liquid component being an alkaline silica sol, drying and calcining. The use of the porous shaped bodies obtained in this way is also described.
