<p>1420782 Furnace J WOTSCHKE 25 April 1973 [29 May 1972] 19708/73 Heading F4B A mixture of incombustible and combustible material is fed down a closed shaft to form a sloping surface in a horizontal chamber, air or oxygen containing gas is fed to the horizontal chamber so that combustion forms a molten layer on the surface and the exhaust gases and molten products are withdrawn downwardly, vapours produced from the top of the shaft being withdrawn and condensed. Material fed to an annular shaft through a hopper and air lock arrangement 50 or by a ram 48 is distributed by blades 32 on a rotatable inner wall, and forms an inverted conical surface below a bell 39. Air preheated in the condenser 42 for the steam withdrawn at 43 is fed to the hollow bell to issue at 44. The combustion of material produces a molten layer 69 which falls through a secondary combustion chamber 53 provided with a start up burner 54. The shaft has a spiral shoulder 33, to feed the material below the bell, and the furnace hearth 35 slopes downwardly to the outlet 34. The arrangement may be used to produce molten oxide from metal mixed with solid fuel. The temperature in the shaft is controlled by introducing crates at the top. In a modification, Fig. 7, molten metal and slag is produced from a mixture including a metal oxide, the carbon monoxide formed being withdrawn through a passage 81 in the bell to burn in the centre of the combustion section. A device 72 feeds the material into the combustion section, and a separate outlet 75 allows the metal to be tapped.</p> |
