The invention relates to a visual display device which uses a varistor 5 as the commutation element for controlling the orientation of the molecules composing a liquid crystal layer 3. The object of the invention is to supply a structure especially including a thick sheet 1 of an insulating material between the liquid crystal 3 and the varistor material 5. The invention applies to the visual display of images transmitted in the form of a video signal, for television and visual display peripherals, in remote transmission. <IMAGE>
