Refractory materials based on silica, silica alumina or alumina are homogenised for 2-5 mins., then a soln. or suspension, pref. aq. and comprising 3-10 wt.% of the refractory materials, is added and the paste is homogenised. The paste may then be moulded and fired at 1100 degrees-1500 degrees C. The soln. or suspension used in the second step contains (a) one or more silicates of Li, K or Mg, opt. hydrated, in a concn. of 0.2-7.0 wt.% of dry materials; (b) one or more cpds. selected from Na aluminate, Na, K, Li or Mg phosphates and phosphoric acid in a concn. of 0.2-7.0 wt.% of the dry materials and/or (c) one or more cpds. selected from FeS, Fe2 Se3, FeCl2, Ca, Mg or BaSO4, Ca, Mg or BaCO3 and dolomite in a concn. of 0.2-7 wt.% of any material. |
