Heat exchanger cooling of neutralised sulphonation mixtures - adding slurry of anhydrous sodium sulphate before cooling

A process for neutralising and cooling organic sulphuric or sulphonic acids comprises first reacting the mixt. contg. the organic sulphuric or sulphonic acid and excess sulphonation agent with an alkali cpd. to form a supersaturated soln. of Na2SO4. The reaction mass is cooled in a heat exchanger whilst introducing an effective amt. of an aq. slurry of anhydrous Na2SO4 to reduce deposition of Na2SO4 on the heat exchanger surfaces. Used partic. in the mfr. of surfactants for detergent compsns.
