PURPOSE:To enable high-contrast rewriting and high-speed large-capacity display by utilizing the difference of transmittance between homeotropic (H) and focal- conic (F) states to display black on a white background. CONSTITUTION:Voltage VH is first impressed between the whole electrodes of an X-Y matrix to convert liquid crystals 1 into the H state of a nematic phase. In this state, since every liquid crystal molecule is aligned in the direction of the electric field, incident light is transmitted and absorbed with a black film 4 to form selected points in a dark state. Then, the H state is converted into an F state to form nonselected points in a light state. This state is the focal-conic state of a cholesteric phase and the spirals of the spiral structure formed by the accumulation type liquid crystals becomes parallel to the base, and reflect the incident light diffusibly to enable light liquid crystal display. As a result, the display device can execute high-speed and large-capacity liquid crystal display capable of being rewrited and scrawled, and therefore, it can render the shape of a word processor flat and portable. |
