An O2- and Pb-contg. cpd. is treated to recover Pb by (a) hot leaching in the aq. phase using a chloriding agent, the Cl- concn. being >=1g equivalent/l and the pH being 6; (b) recovering Pb in soln. and (c) recovering other non-ferrous metals dissolved at the same time as the Pb. An alkali, alkaline earth or NH4 chloride can be used to supply Cl ions. Alternatively HCl and other cpds. which produce HCl e.g. FeCl3 by hydrolysis and Cl2 gas by dismutation can be used. The pH is pref. 0-3. Oxide ores contg. Pb and having a high As and Bi content can be treated to recover Pb and opt. Zn. Factory waste Zn and Pb can be treated.
