PURPOSE:To maintain uniform clamping pressure and a small contact resistance throughout an operation period by adding a small amount of phenol resin to the catalytic layer side of an electrode base material while adding a large amount of phenol resin to the rib side and heating the whole base material for graphitizing the resin component by thermal decomposition. CONSTITUTION:Carbon fiber cloth having both heat resistance and phosphoric acid resistance is immersed in an alcohol solution having phenol resin concentration of 15- 20wt% followed by being pulled out and dried while further being fired for several hours for manufacturing the carbon fiber cloth adhesively impregnated with phenol resin. Next, said carbon fiber cloth is immersed in an alcohol solution having phenol resin concentration of 60-70wt% up to a half in the thickness direction and dried followed by being fired for several hours. The base material given said treatment is heated in the nitrogen atmosphere for several hours in order to thermally decompose phenol resin while graphitizing the carbon generated by thermal decomposition. The region A immersed only in phenol resin solution of 15-20wt% plays the role of a cushion. The electrode base material with ribs can be obtained by performing the cutting processing in the region B. |
