<p>A process for the production of metallic copper comprises the steps of (1) adding ammonia to a solution of copper sulphate to obtain a cupric ammonium sulphate complex solution, (2) treating this solution with sulphur dioxide to give a crystalline precipitate and (3) treating the solid from step 21 with sulphuric acid to form copper or with oxygen while heating to give copper oxide and copper. By-products from the process include (NH4)2SO4, CuSO4 and SO2. In the second alternative for step (3) the copper oxide may be removed by treatment with sulphuric acid to leave the metallic copper.
