An exhaust gas return in an internal combustion engine comprising an intake system and an exhaust system has an exhaust gas return line connecting the intake system and the exhaust system, which line can be closed by a shut-off device actuatable by means of auxiliary power. In order to divert the flow of exhaust gas by simple mechanical means, the shut-off device is used in the exhaust gas return position to divert the flow of exhaust gas into the exhaust gas return line.
