A semifinished product from stainless austenitic Cr/Ni(Mo) or martensitic Cr(Mo) steels is produced from rolled raw material by first quenching the workpiece (1) from the rolling end temperature, holding it for any desired time interval at room temperature, heating it by means of inductive heating (6) to the solution-annealing temperature and quenching it again. The quenching from the required quenching temperature takes place each time by means of quench showers (5) fed from water tanks (4). The process sequence is here controlled by monitoring the temperature, detected by a pyrometer (3), of the workpiece (1) via a control instrument (8) feeding in the set parameters and a regulator (7), the speed of the rolls (2) also being taken into account. <IMAGE>
