The invention relates to a process for welding or partial fusion of the surface of thermoplastic films by means of thermal treatment by a contact process which permits welding or partial fusion of the surface, for example for identification, to be carried out in a simple manner. The aim of the invention is thus to weld or identify thermoplastic films in a simpler manner with the elimination of elaborate auxiliary means. The object is achieved according to the invention by bringing the thermoplastic film into contact with pigments which produce an accumulation of heat and are applied to a carrier. The carrier for pigments can even be the thermoplastic films themselves, with the pigments being embedded in the polymer. The binders used for the pigments on the carrier are those which retain their useful properties, such as heat resistance and strength, upon contact with the thermoplastic films.
