An apparatus is described for the separation of liquid mixtures, for example of sea water into fresh water and more highly concentrated salt solution, with the aid of semi-permeable microporous films. In this case, a heat-insulating, but transparent, coating is arranged above the radiation-absorbing liquid-and water vapour-tight top of the cavity in which the liquid mixture to be separated is located. The vapour leaves the liquid through the semi-permeable microporous film located at the bottom of this cavity, passes through an open-pored heat insulating layer and condenses in the space beneath the open-pored heat-insulating coating. This space is cooled by a double bottom situated underneath, through which flows a likewise liquid mixture. A further heat-insulating layer seals the apparatus at the bottom.
