In heating boilers, especially those for domestic heating systems, the utilisation of the energy of atomisable fuels is optimised, the pollutants in the flue gases are reduced, and the flue gas temperature is reduced when in the heating boiler housing (1), the flue gas outlet (3) is divided off from the combustion chamber (2) by a partition (9) except for a passage opening (11) at the wall (10) on the burner side, and a refractory plate (12) provided with a multiplicity of perforations (16) is arranged below the flame zone (6), so that flame and flue gases are guided around this plate (12) against the outlet direction proper. The resulting flue gases flow partly through the perforations (16) and supply heat to the flame, and partly through a passage opening (14) provided between the plate (12) and the wall (10) on the burner side, thus crossing or flowing around the fuel/air mixture stream and preheating it, before they reach the flue gas outlet (3). <IMAGE>
