The invention relates to a process for cleaning mechanical or electrical equipment or devices using a cleaning liquid, and to an apparatus for carrying out the process. Starting with known cleaning chambers which are ventilated into the open air and in which cleaning liquid is collected in order to be regenerated, the invention has the object of providing small, compact cleaning devices which, by their compact design, low weight and independence of separate exhaust air lines, prove to be mobile and can be operated with varying set-up locations. This is achieved in that the greater part of the air sucked out of the cleaning chamber is, after cleaning by means of impingement-type filters, blown out back into the cleaning chamber, escape of this air being prevented by the charging or operating aperture by the blowing-out taking place in the direction away from the relatively small operating aperture and a 1 to 10 % proportion of the exhausted air being allowed to escape via an absorption filter into the open air. This comprises not only compressed air liberated during atomisation, a slight subatmospheric pressure is also effected in the cleaning chamber, which subatmospheric pressure produces an air current directed into said cleaning chamber through the operating aperture, which air current in turn contributes to preventing the escape of cleaning-agent-loaded air from the cleaning chamber.
