A measurement method for evaluating the local bushing wear of chains, which is manifested by a lengthening of the chain pitch of the chain links. The lengthening of the chain pitch is also accompanied by an increase in the contact radii, with respect to the axis of the sprocket wheel, of the chain links which positively engage in the teeth edges of the sprocket wheel. The radial distances from the axis of the sprocket wheel or from a reference radius at a circumferential point in the arc section of the chain which is in contact with the sprocket wheel are therefore measured and compared with a chain-drive-specific limit value which has been determined empirically in advance and which should be the maximum permissible. If the distance values are larger than the permissible limit value, a local state of wear is, for example, present in the chain which will be responsible for damage.
