In a compactor vehicle comprising a steerable roller 12 and a driven roller 14 at opposite ends of a frame 10, an engine 37 carried by an intermediate frame portion 18 between the rollers 12, 14 and a pair of seats 50, 52 carried by the frame, a horizontal platform 19 on which a seated operator places his feet is disposed vertically at a level below the upper limit of the rollers 12, 14 and horizontally between the rollers, an engine housing 36 extends upwardly from the platform 19 to one side of the seats 50, 52, and each seat faces inwardly from a position near the side of the intermediate frame portion 18 so as to provide a clear line of vision from the seat to the ends of the rollers 12, 14 on that side of the vehicle. The driven roller 14 is mounted in narrow side frame members 16, 17 extending from the intermediate frame portion 18, and the steerable roller 12 is mounted in a yoke 22 connected by a trunnion 24 to a narrow gooseneck 20. A steering wheel 56 and a directional and speed control bar 54 are positioned within reach of an operator in either seat 50, 52. Housings 40, 41 beneath the seats 50, 52 accommodate a battery 42, hydraulic tank 43 and gasoline tank 44. A water tank 46 beneath the platform 19 supplies a sprinkler system. A hydrostatic pump 58 driven by the engine 37 is connected through lines 64, 65 in the side frame member 16 to an hydraulic motor 68 mounted in one end of the driven roller 14. A drive shaft connected to the hydraulic motor 68 extends through the driven roller 14 and drives the latter through planetary reduction gearing 72 mounted within the other end of the roller. A drum brake 62 which acts on the reduction gearing 72 is operated by a parking brake control lever 60. The hydrostatic pump 58 includes control means which automatically reduce the pump output to avoid stalling of the engine 37 if the resistance to movement of the vehicle becomes excessively high. |
