The invention proceeds from an earth leakage current protection device in which a short-circuit circuit breaker is installed in the electrical load apparatus or in the supply lead, which circuit breaker short-circuits the supply lead in the event of a fault and in this way causes the upstream-connected fuse to cut off. In order to be largely independent of the respectively provided system fuse and of the respectively provided network internal impedance, and additionally in order to achieve a shorter cut-off time, that is to say significantly to increase the electrical safety, a relatively low-current fuse is installed in the load apparatus or in the supply lead, in each conductor, and the short-circuiting switch is dimensioned independently of the fault time phase with respect to its switching-on time phase, such that a short-circuit current is ensured which is sufficiently high to cut off all the fuses.
