In a method for controlling the brightness of a display device which is operated using the time-division multiplex method, individual segments, labels or complete element groups of the display device are controlled in terms of their brightness. For this purpose, the overall time frame which is used for driving the segments and labels is split into clock cycles. In order to vary the subjectively sensed brightness (brightness sensitivity) of individual segments and/or labels, they are driven by means of variable pulse widths. The dark phases which occur between the individual pulses can be used in order to obtain (additional) computation time for a computing unit which may be loaded with additional tasks. <IMAGE>
