The marble or granite surface is shaped by a reciprocating tool with a blade (2) having inclined slots (4,5). The slots extend inwards from the working edge of the tool with alternate slots sloping in opposite directions. A layer of abrasive particles is placed between the reciprocating blade and the marble surface. As the blade moves in one direction the grains are forced up those slots which slope downwards in the direction of motion and slide down those slots sloping upwards in the direction of motion. When the tool direction is reversed the direction of flow of the grains in each slot is reversed.
