An apparatus for rolling grooves into the shanks of nails or the like has a roll which can be rotated about a vertical axis and to the circumference of which the nails are fed with their shanks essentially horizontal. The feed bar is offset counter to the direction of rotation of the roll in relation to the vertex of the roll circumference and arranged at the opening of the bar is a depository which keeps the next nail arriving for processing out of contact with the circumference of the roll until a slide presses it obliquely upwards in a controlled manner into the working gap between the roll and a fixed counter-pressure element.
