An activator solution for processing an unhardened gelatino-silver halide emulsion in the presence of a tanning developing agent comprises an aqueous alkaline solution containing a formaldehyde donor, between 30 and 250 mg of free formaldehyde per litre and between 30 and 60 grams per litre of a hydrolysis product of the donor other than formaldehyde e.g. iminodicthanol. Specified donors are oxazolidines z-alkyl-z-nitro- 1,3-propanediols and 2-methyl-2-nitro-1-propanol and sodium formaldehyde bisulphite. The solution may also contain tanning developers alkali metal carbonates, bicarbonates, phosphates and salicylates and requestering agents e.g. EDTA. The activator may be made up as a two part concentrate and used in developing emulsions to produce lithographic plates. The developer may be in the emulsion or activator. |
