The solid electrolyte of a thermal cell, together with its heating device for converting it to the molten state during activation are stored in a container distinct from the casing which holds the positive and negative electrode plates which are respectively connected in parallel. As shown, positive plates 2 of oxidized sintered copper on a copper sheet and negative calcium plates 3 separated by thin ceramic felt separators 4 of cell 1 are contained in metal casing 5, e.g. titanium. The electrolyte 7, consisting of a eutectic mixture of lithium chloride and potassium chloride and a pyrotechnic mixture of aluminium and vanadium pentoxide, which may be in the form of several plates 8 distributed throughout the electrolyte or of starlike shape, are held in container 9 which opens into casing 5 through an aperture. The cell is activated by igniting fuse 10 and the molten electrolyte flows into cell 1. |
