In a calender having several rolls (1, 7), at least one of the rolls, for example an outer one or the lowest one, is designed as a tubular roll with a fixed mount (2) and a roll shell (3) rotating about the mount and supported against it. The roll shell position is determined by means of a position sensor (18) and controlled to certain setpoint values by means of a closed-loop control device (70). A plurality of different setpoint values for the roll shell position are provided here, it being achieved by a suitable choice of the setpoint value that a different number of rolls is effective in each case, while the other rolls rest on their stops and the associated roll nips remain open. <IMAGE>
