The invention relates to an ignition system of the kind comprising a capacitor 19, means for changing the capacitor, and a device 18 connected in series with a pair of output terminals 10, 11 and the capacitor, the device being arranged to break down and conduct when the voltage across the capacitor attains a predetermined value, thereby to allow the capacitor to discharge through a spark device 12 connected across the terminals. According to the invention the system also includes a second capacitor 23 connected in parallel with the first capacitor, a unidirectional current flow device 22 connected in series with the capacitors and arranged to prevent current flow from the first capacitor into the second capacitor and means whereby the second capacitor can be charged when an increase in the energy supplied by the system is required. In a modification the switch 26 is replaced by a selector switch. In one position of the selector switch the transformer 15 only is energized and in the other position of the selector switch the transformer 16 only is energized. The capacitors may be charged from a D.C. source. |
