PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as a monomer for a polymer having optical resolution capability, in high purity, in one step, with simple purification process, by reacting methacrylic acid with a triarylmethylation agent using an anion exchange resin as a condensation agent. CONSTITUTION:Coarse crystal of triarylmethyl methacrylate can be produced in high yield, only by condensing (A) methacrylic acid with (B) a triarylmethylation agent of formula Z3CX [X is atom or atomic group eliminable easily as an anion by the nucleophilic property of methacrylic acid, e.g. halogen, -OSO2C6H4 CH3, -OSO2CH3, -ClO, etc; Z is aryl, alkyl, alkoxy, etc. such as phenyl] in an inert organic solvent in the presence of an ion exchange resin, preferably a tert- amine-type weakly basis ion exchange resin such as commercially available Amberlist (R)A-21, etc., at 0-50 deg.C in several minutes. EFFECT:The ion exchange resin can be regenerated and recycled easily by alkali washing. |
