A catalytic converter unit (11) has an oxidising zone (15) which is arranged inside a reducing zone (13). Between the two zones there is an air feed (16). Due to the arrangement indicated, the oxidising zone (15) is thermally insulated in an optimum manner and reaches its lower operating temperature after only a short period of operation and at relatively low exhaust-gas temperatures. The catalytic converter unit can be used for converting pollutants in hot exhaust gases of all kinds in which both reduction and oxidation reactions are to be carried out. This applies especially to exhaust gases from diesel engines. In this case, the oxidising zone is expediently designed as a catalytic filter (15). <IMAGE>
