In a proposed method which is used to analyse gas mixtures, the gas is cooled, filtered, broken down into subflows and fed to individual analysers. The method is distinguished by a combination of a number of features which result in the response time of the systems being reduced to </= 1 second and the dead time to about 2 seconds. For this purpose, the components for cleaning and cooling the gas are designed to promote flow and arranged in the main gas stream, all the gas paths and cleaning components upstream of a hydrocarbon analyser are heated, the gas paths are, as a whole, kept as short as possible, the quantity of gas collected is set as high as possible to achieve high gas rates, excess gas is only removed, via a by-pass, immediately upstream of the analysis chamber and, finally, the frequency filtering in the analysers is carried out using high-order active filters. <IMAGE>
