For enabling the disabled person to approach a normal existance, a special chair (14, 15) has construction to enable prolonged seating of the person (12) on a seat without danger of producing bed sores. The seat has an upper detachable compliant seat member (20) and an underlying, substantially rigid supporting plate (22). The upper surface of the compliant seat member is contoured, with raised outer portions (54) and depressed central portions (56), the contour matched to the general posterior contour of a seated person and adapted to spread the person's weight to prevent occlusion of blood circulation in tissue in the ischial area. The compliant character of the seat serves to reduce skin-degenerating shear during normal motion of the person. For a disabled person suffering from incontinence, the seat member defines an elongated waste-receiving aperture (58) and the underlying plate has a corresponding aperture (52), and a waste-receiving receptacle (24) is disposed below. The elongated apertures of the seat and plate are positioned to register with flow from the waste discharge passages of the person permanently seated-thereabove, and with the receptacle therebelow. The receptacle is removable and replaceable via access means located below the level of the plate to enabla emptying without disturbing the seated person. |
