Prepn of mixed carboxyalkyl-hydroxy alkyl cellulose - ethers

Mixed carboxy alkyl-hydroxy alkyl cellulose ether, in which the carboxyalkyl and hydroxyalkyls have 2-3 carbon atoms are prepared by reacting cellulose with alkali hydroxide, chlorinated organic acid(2-3 carbon atoms) and an alkylene oxide (2-3 carbon atoms). The ethers are dried in the presence of 0.1-3wt% alkali e.g. sodium hydroxide.
