Process for the preparation of acrylonitrile polymers

In the preparation of polyacrylonitrile and copolymers containing predominantly acrylonitrile by polymerisation of acrylonitrile, alone or with up to 30% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated comonomer, at temperatures of from 0 to 80 DEG C in an aliphatic hydrocarbon or in mixtures of such aliphatic hydrocarbons using a redox catalyst, products having extremely low residual monomer contents are obtained if the hydrocarbons have boiling points in the range between 90 and 130 DEG C and if the polymer suspensions obtained are distilled at temperatures between 70 and 150 DEG C and pressures of between 0.13 and 4.5 bar.
