A multi-purpose ship as a supply unit, rescue unit, oil-defence unit and the like has expandable bow and/or stern halves (6, 7) on at least one end of a main hull part (1), which bow and/or stern halves (6, 7) can be swivelled about joints (39) arranged in each case on the outsides of one end of the main hull part (1). The joints are cylindrical units arranged on either side of the fore-and-aft line at a distance from it. The bottom of the main hull part (1) has a channel (13) in the fore-and-aft line, which channel (13) is at least partly open to the bottom, extends from the end between the expandable ship end parts, in particular bow parts (6, 7), up to the other end, in particular the stern, and is closed to the top. <IMAGE>
