In the method for heating and cooling a separator for obtaining phthalic anhydride from a stream of gas, heat is supplied, to, and removed from, the separator periodically in succession by means of a hot heat transfer medium and a cold heat transfer medium, respectively, and the hot, or cold, heat transfer medium is circulated and reheated, or recooled, outside the separator. The method is characterised in that towards the end of the heating phase heat is removed from the hot heat transfer medium which is returned from the separator, this heat is stored, and the stored heat is returned to the hot heat transfer medium at the beginning of a subsequent heating phase, before the hot heat transfer medium is reheated. Temperature peaks in both the circulating hot and the circulating cold heat transfer medium are reduced. A reduction in the steam requirement peaks during reheating of the hot heat transfer medium avoids adverse effects of the self-sufficiency with regard to energy in the production of phthalic anhydride in the explosion zone.
