The invention relates to compositions for hair treatment and for depilation which contain as active ingredients in aqueous formulation beta -mercaptoisobutyric acid, acceptable salts thereof and/or esters of beta -mercaptoisobutyric acid and/or compounds which are able to release beta -mercaptoisobutyric acid or its salts or esters in alkaline medium.
