Devices which, for example, are used in telephone exchanges or transmission devices are becoming increasingly versatile. Interruptions in the transmission path within the device can be identified by means of test signal transmitters, test signal receivers and a control device. For this purpose, the transmitted test signal is compared with the received test signal. To reduce costs in the test device and to eliminate interference-prone switches, test signal transmitters or test signal receivers are arranged in the device inserts at their inputs or outputs. The control device interrupts the test cycle when the transmitted test signal is received in the test signal receiver. Useful signals and the test signal can be transmitted simultaneously.
