With the use of a portable appliance persons are provided with a means of escaping from houses and high-rise buildings. The appliance is separated into a holding part which is fastened to the building and a control panel which has a rope drum and which is buckled on by the person. After the two parts of the appliance are connected, the person can let himself down on the outer wall of the building, in the course of which a constantly uniform dropping speed is maintained - irrespective of the weight of the person - if the person does not intervene. However, the person can also regulate and stop the dropping speed. Two ropes which are run separately from one another and are separately braked connect the parts of the appliance. The holding part is fastened to the building by ropes, clamps and also by bolts which are driven in by a bolt-thrust device which is accommodated in the holding part, as a result of which firm attachment to the building can be brought about immediately. The appliance is rolled down at a distance from the house wall necessary for the person in order to surmount wall projections and the like. Apart from protective devices against fire and smoke, a further safety device causes the appliance to be automatically braked and stopped when coming down on the ground.
