1,219,717. Comminuting apparatus. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc. 8 April, 1969 [29 April, 1968], No. 17935/69. Heading B2A. Apparatus for comminuting webs or sheets of scrap material, e.g. plastics, comprises rollers 16, 18 Fig. 1, having meshing teeth 12, 14 arranged helically so as to cut the material progressively into parallel strips. The strips are either returned to the same cutters or further comminuted into squares or diamonds by cutters 22, 24 having helical teeth 26, 28 arranged at right angles to the teeth 12 14. Where only one pair of cutters 36, 38, Fig. 3, is used they are surrounded by a recirculating screen 44 having perforations 46. The screen directs larger pieces back into the bite of the cutters, the rest passing out through the perforations. Compressed air is directed by nozzles 59, 60 between the cutters and cover plates 56, 58 redistributes the material and evens out the cutting loads on the teeth. Alternatively, the cutters may have a herringbone pattern so that the material is evenly distributed, Fig. 2. Only one cutter of a pair is driven, and consequently the teeth overlap slightly. A precise cutter profile is described for cutters 16 and 18. |
