<p>Natural and synthetic polymers such as (co)polyamides, (co)polyesters, regenerated cellulose, cotton, etc., are rendered self extinguishing by incorporating 0.5-30 wt.% esp. 2-15 wt.% of a reaction prod. of melamine with an acidic cpd. such as an (in)organic acid or an organic acid anhydride. The self extinguishing additives are made e.g. by reacting melamine at 100-300 degrees C in aq. or organic medium with acidic cpds., such as acetic ahydride, propionic acid anhydride, butyric acid anhydride, phthalic anhydride, formic acid, acetic acid, propionic aic, butyric acid, sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, etc. If the additive is intended for use with polyamides, it may further be modified with caprolactam. The melamine derivs. may be incorporated into the polymer e.g. by addn. to the condensants used in the initial prodn. of the polymer; by compounding wth the polymer e.g. in an extruder; by addn. to spinning dopes, etc.,; or by application e.g. (non-woven) fabrics from aq. suspension. The additives gives excellent flame retardant properties e.g. to textile materials without deleterious effects on the remaining properties of the material.</p> |
