The plants are accommodated in a series of trays, etc. in one or more vertical rows, while a pipe runs upwards from below the bottom one to above the top one, liquid being delivered into the top end. Some at least of the trays are connected to the pipe. A body (20) is movable up and down in the pipe (5) under the action of a control mechanism (21 - 26). Fluid is delivered to the top end of the pipe at a rate faster than it can leak past the body. There is a connection between the base of each tray (1) and the pipe, along which fluid can flow in either direction, dependent on the body position.
