A system for connecting and controlling an external device is arranged so that it connects external devices to a main apparatus consisting of a computer, and controls the external devices. Data on external devices connected to each of connectors (CN1 to CN4) of the main apparatus are input through a control panel (4), and the main apparatus prepares connection data from this data on the external devices. When the main apparatus has specified one of the external devices connected to the corresponding connectors, the main apparatus effects a transfer of data between itself and that external device connected thereto.
