<p>A fibre reinforced laminate having fibres uniformly oriented to each other is prepd. by forming a fibre reinforced laminate comprising arbitrarily oriented fibres in a hardened thermoplastic resin matrix, heating the laminate to a temp. at which the matrix becomes plastic, exposing the plastic matrix to compressive or tractive forces which cause linear flow of the matrix so that the fibres in the matrix orient themselves on their own parallel to the direction of flow and cooling the matrix while maintaining a constant pressure until it is hardened. The laminate has a low wt. and increase strength in the fibre direction. The fibres have a lower cross section than conventional laminates. The fibre reinforcement may be prepd. in situ (see below) giving bodies with improved mechanical and thermal characteristics. Multilayer laminates may be prepd. with the fibres oriented differently in each layer.</p> |
