<p>The method for making an intertia starter motor pinion assembly comprises a barrel (10) provided in the form of a metal tube having one end deformed to produce an inwardly directed flange. A pinion (11) is secured to the flange to retain it against axial and rotational movement relative to the tube. A control nut (12) is a secured to the end of the tube remote from the flange to retain the control nut against axial and rotational movement relative to the tube. The barrel may be deformed to give the same non-circular shape as the control nut, e.g. hexagonal. Alternatively the barrel and control nut are of circular shape with knurling on the nuts outer surface. The control nut can be produced by a sintering operation. The barrel can be produced having thinner side walls than those formed in a barrel made by a deep drawing operation.</p> |
