The rotary regenerative air preheater has a stationary regenerative heat-exchange mass, first stationary ducting for conducting exhaust gas to and from the mass and second stationary ducting for conducting air to and from the mass. It comprises a number of concentrically arranged separate ducts beyond each axial end face of the mass and within the first stationary ducting and a cowl at each axial end face to the mass for conducting air to or from the respective end face and the number of separate ducts. Each cowl is rotatable to sweep the respective end face of the mass, in synchronism with the other cowl, each cowl comprising a number of hoods, the cowl being rotationally symmetrically arranged with respect to the axis of the mass and each hood including radially extending bounding walls and being subdivided internally into compartments by at least one radially extending dividing wall.
