L-amino acids are prepared by reacting the corresponding alpha -keto acid with ammonia, in the presence of a compatible source of reducing equivalents, and in the presence of a microorganism culture in minimal medium wherein the microorganism produces dehydrogenase and transaminase enzymes of suitable specificity in response to induction.
