[Also in Division C2] A pharmaceutical composition of enhanced stability comprises a carrier and a high-melting erythromycin base having a melting point in the range 183‹-194‹C. (see Division C2). Formulations comprise suppositories, intramuscular injections, tablets, capsules, elixirs and emulsions. A stable suspension consists of the erythromycin base, a triglyceride of caprylic and capric acids with or without 2% aluminium monostearate. Suppositories are prepared by forming the high melting point erythromycin base in situ by dissolving in cocoa butter and using the suspension so prepared. Preferably, the high melting point erythromycin base is ground to a uniform particle size and then incorporated in cocoa butter or other suppository base. |
