A method of processing solid hydrocarbonaceous material such as oil shale to give off kerogen vapours using a plurality of retorts (R1, R2, R3) interconnected by a network of pipes and valves so that each retort may be cycled through a number of processing phases interacting with the other phases in the other retorts. Typically the shale is heated in phase I in retort (R1) by hot gas through line (54) from the combustion of residual carbon in phase II in retort (R2) on partially spend shale previously processed in phase I, so as to give off kerogen vapours through line (56) which are further processed in receiver (57). Retort (R3) is used in phase III for cooling of the shale (after combustion in phase II) by passing a proportion of the off-gas through the retort via line (55) before the retort is recharged with fresh feed shale between phases and cycled to phase I. |
