The five lobed piston (30) is provided with an internally toothed wheel (54) which meshes with a gear wheel (48) mounted eccentrically on the crankshaft. The gear wheel (48) is provided with two rows of teeth and the second row of teeth meshes with an internal gear mounted on the end face of the casing. The numbers of teeth are so chosen that the motion imparted to the piston is such that its centre line moves in a circular path but the piston itself does not rotate. This motion causes the vanes (60) to oscillate radially and the volumes (62) between the vanes to alternately expand and contract.
