PURPOSE:To improve the responsiveness to heat scanning by placing a liq. crystal layer so that it is adjacent to a pyroelectric material layer, holding the layers between a pair of electrode substrates, and causing a change in the orientation of the liq. crystal by a change in an electric field caused by scanning the pyroelectirc material by heating. CONSTITUTION:A liq. crystal layer 17 is placed so that it is adjacent to a pyroelectric material layer 16, the layers 16, 17 are held between a pair of electrode substrates 14, 15, and a change in the orientation of the liq. crystal is caused by a change in an electric field caused by scanning the pyroelectric material by heating. A ferroelectric liq. crystal is used as the liq. crystal. When the layer 16 is heated H by irradiating laser light in a state in which no voltage is impressed from a power source E, the temp. is changed to change the polarized state of the pyroelectric material, so charges are generated on the surface of the pyroelectric material, and voltage is produced in the layer 17. This voltage vanishes when the temp. of the pyroelectric material is made constant. A change in the orientation of the liq. crystal by a change in the voltage impressed to the layer 17 according to the pyroelectric action is utilized for carrying out display. The response speed is considerably increased by using lthe ferroelectric liq. crystal, and bistability is effectively attained. |
