PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of knocking through variation of an actual compression ratio, by a method wherein installing a valve opening and closing timing regulator which varies and regulates the closing timing of an air intake valve and regulates the opening timing of the suction valve more finely than a variation in the timing of the closing timing thereof. CONSTITUTION:A cam shaft 22 and a locker shaft 23 are supported within a locker room 21 of a 4-cylinder engine 2 in a manner that they are vertically separated from each other, locker arms 26, cylinders No.1-No.4, rotatably and axially slidably secured to the locker shaft 23, and can be selectively brought into contact with cams 24A and 24B for the high speed and the low speed of the cam shaft 22. In case ignition is made in order of No.1, No.3, No.4, and No.2 a pair of the locker arms 26, corresponding to the No.1 and No.2 cylinders and the No.3 and No.4 cylinders, are held by holders 28 and 29, and the holders 28 and 29 are adapted to be capable of being axially shifted by means of actuators 31 and 32. This permits variation of the opening and closing timings of a suction valve and variation of an actual compression ratio. |
