The messages are exchanged byte by byte. The central processing unit interrogates all the sets successively. Each set responds to the central processing unit before the latter can interrogate another one. Each set is interrupted by a central processing unit control message and it is also interrupted by the message in response to the control message. The invention applies especially well to the exchanging of messages between an automatic telephone exchange and the subscriber sets connected thereto.
